Edmund Sebastian HastingsEvery villain is the hero of his own story
Born to be, Edmund Sebastian Hastings
Call me, Edmund, Seb [/i][/blockquote] I blow out my candles on, October 31st 2004
I'm pushing, Seventeen
You can tell by my attitude I'm a,Scorpio
I' was born a, Wizard
I tend to crush on, Straight
Due to my rents I'm a,Pureblood [/i] [/blockquote] Sorting hat says I was born a,Slytherin
I'm in my,Seventh Year.
Work is overrated, n/a
Oh look it's shiny,Wand: Twelve and a half inches, cedar, dragon heartstring
They say I look like, Francisco Lachowski But I don't really see it- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - You don't know your beautiful:His personality is not the only thing he has attempted to keep to a proper standard: his appearance is well kept as well. Fortunately for him, he was blessed with what can only be called handsome features. His jaw is sharp and strong in the way and man’s should be, and his bone structure is just defined enough to stop him from verging on “pretty”. A slight Italian heritage on his mother’s side gave him naturally tanned skin, dark eyes, and dark, thick hair. His skin is a sort of light tan, and thorough mastery of dermatology he has managed to keep it clear of the acne that generally plagues adolescents. His eyes are deep set and brown to a point of near blackness, which some describe as mysterious and others describe as intimidating. They are framed by a pair of thick, though well groomed, eyebrows. His lips are relatively full and shapely, though they don’t quite create a feminine appearance.
His figure is perhaps what he pays the most attention to. Though he doesn’t really need to, his teenage-boy-metablolism would keep him slim, he works out every day to maintain his lithe, strong figure. He stands at 6.0” and weighs 158lbs which no one would argue is entirely muscle. Much as he is a proper gentleman, the payoff from his exercise sometimes tempts him into taking his workout shirt off to impress the fairer sex and to sense the jealousy from the other boys. Though he does work hard to build muscle, and he has definitely mostly accomplished that goal, he still appears to be just quite tall and skinny. Frankly, it’s just sort of a teenage boy thing. As far as his family is concerned, the tall, slim, muscular build is quite normal. He doesn’t really hold out much hope for being any larger than he already is.
Classy boys wear classy clothes, and Seb is no exception. While even many wizards have adopted casual muggle clothing for the sake of comfort and practicality, Seb is seldom seen in anything other than robes and traditional wizard gear. Generally, he prefers blacks, whites and greys for their simplistic and never over the top qualities. Though admittedly, he does own the odd t-shirt, generally he dresses to the nines with ties, dress pants, dress shirts, and of course, the nicest matching robes he can find. As a boy he was never at want of money and therefore could afford any clothes he desired. Needless to say, he picked the clothes that expressed the fact that he has lots of money.
What make me unique; When envisioning the embodiment of a Slytherin, you’re indirectly picturing Edmund Hastings, or Seb, to his friends. He is equally charming and cruel, ambitious and manipulative, spiteful and well-mannered. Having been raised in a strict pureblood household he is the image of a well-bred wizard. His behavior in a proper setting is impeccable, and he holds a great amount of hostility towards anyone he considers inferior to him (which is essentially anyone who is not a pureblood male wizard). He speaks well and is undoubtedly a winsome sort. He keeps himself to high society, for his classist nature hates to mingle with the filth who attend Hogwarts.
See, there is a common misconception about heroes and heroism. Picture a hero and anyone will say that they saw the likes of James Potter cozied up to some muggles protecting their sorry selves from the magic that could harm them. Muggles are innocent right? Wrong. Blood purists are how they are because they remember the past, and Edmund knows that history tells of a time when witches and wizards were prosecuted for their power and burned at the stake. The ancestors of blood traitors like Potter were slaughtered by muggles who greedily wished the power for themselves. No one knows how to hold a grudge like the Hastings, because hundreds of years later a world without muggles seems sublime. It’s not a matter of race, it’s a matter of vengeance. Those filth were never punished for what they did to the magical race. The truth about his hatred towards muggles is that though there are greedy, self-centered wizards, he’s never met any as bad as the muggles.
Unlike most others in his family, or other purebloods like them, Edmund actually doesn’t want to kill off the mudbloods. Of course, they’re lower and of course they don’t exactly deserve status as witches and wizards, however, their ability to perform simple magic would make them into good servants and housekeepers. When Seb was fourteen, a mudblood girl’s parents got into some trouble with his family, and now she works for his oldest brother. House elves are fine, but they’re just not as pretty to serve dinner to you and your party as a little mudblood.
It should be mentioned that Edmund has never been one to talk about his disdain for muggles and mudbloods in a vulgar sense. Despite being more or less a horrible person, he hardly ever uses the term “mudblood” in public, always referring to them as muggle-borns because he considers it to be foul sounding. He speaks of them with what can be described as nothing other than polite disdain. The Hastings are a very well off family and so Seb grew up with the best in society, and he is nothing if not well mannered. He scarcely uses the word “hate” because it sounds coarse, and he was brought up better than that. As far as first impressions are involved, he is prone to coming off as cold but polite to those he doesn’t wish to impress, and charming and charismatic to those he does care for.
One word that tends to follow him when talking about his personality is “mean”, however unlike others dubbed with the title, he seldom ever says anything. What’s mean about him is his cold condescension and aloofness. Without saying a single word, he has a way about his manner that is capable of making others feel reduced to absolutely nothing in his wake. He is the master of the cold stare. Edmund likes to hold himself above others and to remind them that he is superior due to his expert control of his emotions.
Despite what he would like to think, Edmund is not completely perfect and he does have weaknesses. The reason Tom Riddle was such a spectacular Dark Wizard was that he had no sense of love and he didn’t feel the need to protect the weak. In most ways, Edmund has the same ideals: except for children. No matter their race, their blood status, or their behavior, children and the exception to his rule about hating those who are lower than him. Believe it or not, this inhospitable gentleman has a soft spot for children. Until they reach about Hogwarts age, he finds that he sees them as completely innocent and unaware of the evils they might inherit when they grow up. Muggle children were unaware of the fact that they would grow up to be greedy, and though he knew that they would eventually become the things he loathes so much, he has a fanciful notion about preserving that state of innocence. Edmund would never harm a child, and it causes him a lot of pain when others on “his side” harm children.
And though he is cold, calculating and in a sense, quite mature, he is still a teenager. Beautiful women are another weakness of his. This is not in the way children are, it is more than when he sees them he can’t help but feel comfort in knowing that there are beautiful things in this world. It is for that same reason that he loves gardens. That, however, is beside the point. Seb doesn’t really date, he is not an intimate person and actually he is rather repelled by promiscuous and flirtatious women. Though he does admire their beauty, he prefers to look upon them from afar rather than to be dragged into their splendor. He enjoys beautiful things and can often be easily distracted by them.
All in all, he is very mature for a seventeen year old. His emotions are generally well-checked, his ambition kept carefully guarded, and weaknesses masked. He is polite, proper, sexist, classist, and generally just the personification of everything we wish we could extinguish in this world. Every villain is the hero in their own story: though he may not seem sympathetic to an onlooker, from his perspective, everything he does is for the right reasons.

Living the teenage dream,
Since before anyone living can remember, the Hastings have been living in their estate outside of London. Since even before then, the Hastings had always married within the few other pureblood families who remained untainted by muggles and other impurities. The families with their unblemished reputations kept passing money along, and the purebloods grew in wealth until the few great Estates in the English countryside had become something of a marvel. There were few because only a handful of families were smart enough not to mix with unclean blood. It was into this world that Edmund Sebastian Hastings was born.
Edmund was born on Halloween, and he became the third son of Miranda and Edgar Hastings who frankly hadn’t much wanted girls anyway. Just like any Hastings boy, Seb was immediately taught “right” from “wrong”, which meant that before he could talk, the basics of blood purity were ingrained in his psyche. His oldest brother Cassio was seven years his senior, and therefore was old enough to already have a strong base with blood purity. Duncan was much younger, however their two year age gap was enough for both older Hastings boys to learn enough about their family’s beliefs to sway their younger brother. Even before his father had taught him their magical history, Seb was already pitted against those with impure blood.
Childhood in the Hasting’s house was mostly characterized by lavish dinner parties, uncomfortable dress robes, and chastising about poor manners. Edmund was born into a world where he was forced to speak kindly to Mrs. Lestrange even when he didn’t like the old bat one bit. He grew up constantly exposed to money and good society. In that world, he learned quickly, that if he misbehaved he was punished. Once, at a dinner party with his parents and one other couple, he whined over not having second helpings of mashed potatoes, and his father quickly taught him that well-bred boys don’t lie. His entire childhood was spent pretending to be a miniature adult instead of having fun like regular kids do. Families with status like the Hastings expected to have children who upheld the same standard of excellence as the adults, and therefore, Seb was very seldom demonstrated any sort of affection as a boy. He was more often given strong reprimands.
When Seb was four, his oldest brother received his Hogwarts letter and became the first of the three boys to go off to Hogwarts. Though it should have been a striking event, Seb was still quite young, and he and Cassio didn’t really have much of a relationship outside of the older-brother-bullies-younger-brother type thing, and even that was only on occasion when their parents weren’t watching. With only two years between Seb and Duncan, it would have been easy for the two to develop a close friendship, however, the older Hastings’ were always just mentors to the youngers. It was often asked by the other children if the Hastings boys even had any friends. The answer was likely no. Seb spent most of his childhood sitting in his large bedroom reading books. When he was young, he had loved fairy tales. The tales of Beadle the Bard, and even some of the muggle tales by the Brother’s Grimm had fascinated him. These books were the ones he read in the privacy of his own room, for when his mother found out about the fanciful stories with which he was filling his head, she burned his books. ”There are no happy endings, Edmund.” she told him sternly. Eventually he learned to believe her.
Honestly, very little of consequence happened in his life until his fourth year at Hogwarts when the poor muggle family of a Ravenclaw girl in his year couldn’t afford to pay for her books. That year, the Hastings parents had sent their eldest son with their two younger boys instead of accompanying them themselves. Cassio was a man of 19 at the time, and he was living on his own in an Estate that the Hastings’ had reserved for their eldest son. When he heard their sad story, Seb directed his brother over to them, and his brother made a deal. The family could borrow some of his personal money, however, they had to pay it back in full by the end of the year otherwise they owed him a favor of his choosing. The family foolishly accepted. They were ignorant of the fact that no one should ever strike a deal with the Hastings’. A year later, they hadn’t paid back their debt, and Cassio decided that their daughter would live and work for him until one of them died or until he dismissed her. There was a threat attached, but Seb was never allowed to know exactly what it was. Up until this time, Seb had never truly understood what kind of cruelty his family was capable of. They were capable of much.
Finally, one of the biggest events in his young life was the murder of Harry James Potter. For families with a history of dark alliance, this was the dawn of a new era. Seb found that the boys he spent time with at school were turning towards darker pass times, and he found that there were whispers in the halls about what their duty was in this new war. He found that he heard the word war a lot.
