the air grows heavy all thoughts the same… here comes the rain
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He gave a heavy sigh and set down the quill he had been using to grade the pre exam papers he had assigned his students. As he closed his eyes, he rolled his head around his chest, back and shoulders hearing light snapping sounds as the joints were forced to move after not moving for quite some time. Next he rolled his shoulders back again hearing some snapping sounds. With another sigh he pushed away from his desk to stand and twist his upper body, yet again hearing snapping sounds. I’m only in my twenties, I feel so old. Dropping his arms to his side he swung them back and forth as he closed his eyes again and moved his head around. Feeling slightly more alive, he looked down at the still deep pile of papers he had to grade and put his hands on his hips, after brushing the tails of his dress jacket out of the way. His weight shifted from both feet to on, sending the lightened one forward on bended knee. It was then that he heard heavy rain hitting the window behind him.
Slowly, Aidric turned and moved towards the window to look over the grounds. Though the rain had started to obscure the view of the night, Aidric could still barely see the tops of the towers around him. With a scoff he allowed his gaze to wander over the castle roof tops and then the vast lake. As he watched he saw a large tentacle came out of the water, wave around in the air before submerging under the water’s surface again. The fact that there was something as silly as a giant squid in the lake next to the castle was something that Aidric had never understood. With a shake of his head he crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the cold stone wall next to the window. His warm breath fogged the window in front of him, blocking his view of the castle. Taking that as a sign, Aidric uncrossed his arms and turned from the window and again put his hands on his hips after pushing his dress jacket out of the way. His eyes fell upon the work he still had to do and shook his head. I’m just not in the mood tonight.
As if he had long ago decided what his next move would be, Aidric crossed the room to his door and grabbed the handle, his long fingers wrapping around the metal making it easy for him to pull the door towards him so he could exit. The cool air from the hall washed across Aidric causing him to take a deep breath of the musty draft. Though he came to the castle for other reasons, Aidric felt drawn to the way the castle felt and smelled. It was a beautiful place even if it was drafty and cold, but Aidric wasn’t one to express his inner loves. Secrets, that’s what was within him, lots and lots of secrets that no one even suspected. Or if they do then I need them, Aidric thought with a malicious smile. He needed a lot of people, not because he enjoyed their company, but because he wanted their secrets or skills; personal gain, that’s what he cared about.
As he made his way down the dimly lit hall, Aidric stuffed his hands into his black pants pockets. His pace was one of slow leisure; he didn’t have anywhere to go so why bother rushing to get there? His polished, hard soled shoes made sharp tapping sounds as he advanced down the hall. Though dinner had ended and many students were already getting into their beds, Aidric could smell food wafting up the stairs towards him. The intoxicating smell filled his nose which caused his stomach to growl loudly. Apparently, he had been grading papers for so long that he missed dinner… again. He often missed dinner because he was busy with one thing or another; mostly he was answering or sending owls to some prospect or other. It had been some time since his superiors had given him a task to do, the fact of which had not slipped passed Aidric. Before term he had a list of things he needed to accomplish, but he hadn’t received any letters recently, though he wouldn’t admit it, it made him worried and angry; but mostly angry. They need me! Aidric thought bitterly. I took this stupid job because they needed someone on the inside.
A sound from the hall caused Aidric to halt and reach for his wand. Not sure if the sound had been made by a human or the Annoying Peeves, Aidric wanted to be ready. Slowly he advanced towards the sound. Though he wasn’t sure which empty room the sound had come from, he passed several guessing that the sound had come from father down. After a few passed rooms, another sound broke the quiet from a classroom only feet in front of him. Walking even more slowly, Aidric slid along the wall towards the room. Gingerly he reached for the handle, trying to open the door with as little noise as possible. Glad that the door was one that worked as it should, he was able to access the room in silence. Cautiously he peaked in and saw two shadows propped up against the desks, though it was hard to tell if it was two people for sure or not. Silently he lit the end of his wand bathing the room in milky white light. “Shouldn’t you be elsewere?” His rough voice echoed in the empty room.
The two split apart and naturally Aidric recognized them both, one in particular as a student he was due to lose to graduation. Pitty she had nothing I could use. He didn’t at all mean that in the creepy way it sounded. Never would he get involved romantically with a student, he was saddened that she had to skill or knowledge that he could use. Both students lowered their faces as they turned crimson. Without a word they ducked passed Aidric and rushed off down the hall away from him. Aidric watched them as they disappeared. In spite of himself he smiled slightly, remembering how he had done the very same thing while at Hogwarts as a student though his ventured hardly meant what he was sure the two’s night meant. Shaking his head he entered the room and crossed to the window to look out again. This time he had a view of the Forbidden Forest, a place that he did not fear. He crossed his arms over his chest again and looked out at the night, wondering what darkness lurked in the depths of the Forbidden Forest.
