It was the best I’ve ever been…
…I want to feel that way again.
[/blockquote] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perched on the stone window ledge of an empty tower classroom, Kit sat with one leg pulled to his chest and an arm resting atop it. The other leg hung off the ledge lightly swinging back and forth. Though the stone frame which pressed against his back was hard and cold, the pressure from the stone felt therapeutic against his spine. Outside the sun shone brightly which just happened to be a rarity for this time of year. Past experience told Kit however that just because the weather looked pleasing enough, it could always change into something much less desirable. Until Kit had come to Hogwarts, this type of weather would have sent him underground until night fall, but with the help of the sun ring his kind was given, he was able to enjoy the sunshine along with his peers, even if it was just for a short while. Even with the protection of the ring Kit still wasn’t able to stay outside in the direct sunlight for as long as he would like. The rays from the sun, after an hour or so started to irritate his skin sending him in doors again. I could always take a walk around the lake, he mused, swinging his leg still. By the time I got close to the castle it would be time to come in anyway, might be better than sitting here alone.
The state that Kit presently found himself in was one out of the ordinary for him. When he had free time between classes, he usually found his friends and lounged with them in some secluded place. Today however, he didn’t feel up to his usual camaraderie. Keeping up pretenses had started to take its toll on the young vampire and he felt he needed a change. With a sigh he leaned his forehead against the cool glass of the window and looked down at the grounds. Even from this height he could still see the students who wandered the grounds in the bright sun; just one of the few perks of being what he was. As he watched the students he noticed one who looked like she was in a hurry to escape something. Kit leaned forward and watched as the girl moved across the grounds, ignoring everyone else to sit alone. With a smirk, he swung his leg over the ledge and hopped down, landing lightly on his toes. He knew exactly who he had seen leave the castle, even if she didn’t have her trademark neon multicolor highlights, Kit would have known the girl from sight. She looked just like her sister, but her the way she held herself was the exact opposite. Where Angela was shy and drawn into herself, Angelique was loud and not at all afraid. He now had a reason to leave his solitude.
Taking his time, Kit made his way out of the tower towards the grounds. Because classes had already started for this hour, he was glad to see that he met no resistance on the way through the castle. By the time he got to the grand staircase he started to grow impatient with just how big the castle was. With a growl, he began to take each step two at a time so it took less time to get to the entrance hall for which he was glad. If he knew Angelique as well as he thought he did then he knew she would eventually get bored with her location and move on; she was restless and he liked that. It never occurred to him that maybe Angelique wanted to be alone or that she wouldn’t want to see him. Even if she just wanted to get away from the castle and wait for company, Kit never thought about the what if; what if she didn’t want his company?
It was then that he thought about the what if. The thought of just maybe Angelique didn’t want to see him caused him to stop suddenly. If in fact she didn’t want his company then he was obviously waisting his time and Kit was sure that she wouldn’t want to see him. With a sigh he stuffed his hands into his pants pocket and kicked at the stone floor with the toe of his shoes. Now what was he to do? Perhaps he could wander around the dungeons. Kit shuddered at the thought of the dark, dank and smelly castle sub levels, they didn’t bother him exactly, but he didn’t want to subject his sensitive nose to something so unappealing. He let out another sigh that made an audible sound through his lips. So the dungeons were out, and the Great Hall held nothing for him, then where was he to go? I suppose I could still go outside, I’m already here after all. For a few more seconds, Kit stood there digging his toe at the stone floor before he finally decided to head out; at least he could find something to occupy him on the grounds.
As he stepped into the light of day, he hissed, flinching from the brightness. In the dim light of the tower, Kit hadn’t realized just how bright it was out. Looking down at his hand, Kit made sure the ring was still on his ring finger. With a sigh he looked across the grounds, blinking several times to get used to the light. It took longer for him than it would have for a normal person to get used to the bright light, but eventually he was able to tolerate it enough to venture further. Once he got his bearings with the sun, he then had to gain them with his positioning. From this angle everything looked different than it had from the tower. Not sure, from where he stood, as to which way Angelique had gone, he stood there just scanning the lawns looking for some sign of her so he could avoid her and any confrontation running into her might cause. Just when it seemed like he had lost her, a light breeze kicked up and with it the smells of the grounds. Kit inhaled deeply taking in the familiar sent of the grounds. That’s when he smelled the familiar sent of Angelique. His head snapped towards the direction the smell came from and with no further hesitation he headed in the opposite direction which happened to be towards the lake.
Once he started walking it didn’t take long to start enjoying himself. It was a beautiful day and it seemed that other students thought so to. Spring was in the air and it was an amazing time of year. All the things that had died in fall and winter were now coming to life again. The flowers were starting to pop through the ground; birds were starting to come back that were not fond of the cold. Kit enjoyed this time of year and watching new life come back to the world. Taking a deep breath he smelled the dew off the ground, the fishy smell of the lake, the sun warmed students. Kit froze again as he took in the smell of the students be warmed by the sun. Instantly his thirst presented itself in the forefront of his mind. Instantly his hunting reflexes sprang to life, he crouched trying to pinpoint his target, but then he realized what he was doing. Kit cursed loudly and then he ran.
And he kept running. He had to get away from the other students. No matter what he couldn’t feed on them, that wasn’t who he was. Kit felt horrable for thinking about hunting them down, but it was hard to control himself sometimes. Apparently this was one of the times he wasn’t going to be able to be near the students when the sun was making them smell so good. So he was doing the one thing he had already considered doing, he was running. At first he ran towards the forest, but it held no appeal to him so he turned towards the lake. The wind hit his face as he sped along the bank. As he ran the smell of the water seemed to wash away what he had been smelling, but it wasn’t enough to wash away the memory of how they students had smelled. Kit growled and ran faster becoming a blur. Before he knew it he was already almost back to the grounds. Hissing, he altered his course and ran towards the Covered Bridge and hoped desperitly that no one was there.
As he neared the bridge Kit slowed and took a deep breath, but smelled no one. With a sigh he slowed to a walk and stuffed his hands into his pocket. As he stepped onto the wood of the bridge his feet made thunking sounds on the planks. The sound made Kit smile. It had been some time since Kit had wandered this way and now he wondered why. Kit walked until he got the very middle of the bridge and then turned and leaned over the side, resting his arms on the railing. The view from here was beautiful. The grounds were in the distance, and below him was a deep ravine. Here he knew he was safe, at least for the time being. It’s beautiful here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
