It was odd to Mathieu how fast his first sets of classes blew by. When ever he was waiting for something special in the past time tend to stand still, but not today. The masquerade ball was tonight and never-the-less he actually had a date. A beautiful one at that, it was going to be magical. Not the the magic they practiced but more the the magic in a fairytale, bliss everlasting and sweet. Mathieu was always a quite shy boy, and in the past he had noticed that about Amelia Longbottom as well. This always struck curiosity in his mind, how a girl could be so beautiful and act insecure even at times. The friendship had started way back in his third year. He always noted from afar that he wanted to play out the ice breaker but never had courage til that time. Third year he swallowed his fear and placed his book down and actually engaged in conversation. The two has similarities and it was soon a great friendship. During the years it grew stronger and even if she had her painful shy moment Mathieu tried his best to act himself. He was very quirky and moody at times but overall he was a dreamer. Dreaming of having adventures and fun forever. In reality he was getting older but a part of him always wanted to procrastinate age as much as possible.

Now it was time to ditch class and head to the ugly statue of the One eyed witch. Mathieu was always one to do things last moment when it came to anything besides his studies of course. The boy has to pick up his tux and a couple little trinkets he decided upon for Miss Longbottom. Mathieu was very romantic when he wanted to be but he didn't want to make things seem speedy for the girl. Taking things slowly was the key to any kind of relationship. The trust and loyalty was there but he wasn't sure where her feelings lay toward him. Nor if they would ever become anything outside of friends. It was a thrill just to have the opportunity to think about. Mathieu made his way to the statue looking around weary. "Dissendium" Mathieu whispered watching the hump on her back reveal the passage way. Once in he looked around grabbing his wand flicking it. "Lumos Maxima." he spoke walking toward Hogsmeade village. This passage way was a long cold one. It would talk him an hour on foot so what better to do then to sing by the time. Mathieu kept at a steady pace as he hummed and sung to himself during his venture to Hogsmeade.

The end of the tunnel was near as he walked a bit quicker now looking at Honeydukes shop. He saw all the Valentine's candy and smirked grabbing a heart shaped box of chocolates. Mathieu paid and exited the shop to the street. The boy walked around aimlessly til he just decided to step into the florist shop. His eyes lit up a bit as the smell of many flower filled his lungs and he exhaled with a grin before walking to the cashier. Mathieu explained he needed a couple of those fancy decorative flowers that were used for muggle proms and weddings and such. To no surprise they actually had a name corsage. Mathieu wouldn't know, he had never the need to obtain such a thing before. After picking out the roses and decorations he was told to return in an hour. It was alright he have plenty of time to pick up his tux and make sure it was fit. The boy pondered on the subject of getting a hair cut but he decided against it in the street. Mathieu was known for his curly locks and saw himself to be quite attached to this hair style. Upon entering the next shop he walked to the women whom had everything ready for him. The boy tried on his dress robes and looked himself over in the mirror. He liked the black and white and silver feel to it yet he didn't like the jacket. A vest was much more down his alley. After switching this around he found himself looking quite handsome and was ready to pick up his little flower arrangements.

Mathieu walked into the shop and quickly grabbed his things passing off the cash. The night sky was falling and he only had about two hours to get hid hide end back to the castle, up to the towers and down to the main floor, to await his beautiful date of the evening. Mathieu entered from the back of Honeydukes and journeyed back to Hogwarts. Now it was setting in how nervous he actually should have been. This night was the first he'd attend something social in a while. Mathieu wondered what Brigitte was going to do, he just hoped his sister didn't find too much trouble. Soon he was entering the castle from the passage and he made his way swiftly up to the towers. The was about an hour to spare. The common room was crashed with girls helping one another with their make up and dresses and he just blushed rushing toward his dorm. Mathieu quickly shaved and got into his dress robes, it was a huge transformation from what he was used to but he winked to the man in the mirror. Mathieu stood there odd trying to fix his flower in his pocket properly. The boy chewed the inside of his cheek setting it properly. "Well here goes." A faint whisper escaped his lips as he held her corsage glancing over himself once more. Mathieu would give Amy her chocolates later he didn't assume she wanted to hold them all night when they should be dancing. He had almost forgot when he saw his mask hanging from the corner of his night stand. The boy placed it on his face smiling genuinely. Now the ball was rolling.

Behind this mask he was exactly who he wanted to be. He could be charming, dashing, brave, or simply himself. This was the thrill of masquerade he couldn't help to think. Strolling down the long halls to the grand staircase he saw other students giving one another compliments. Wasn't the point of this ball to be hidden? The mask dangling at the hands of many made him wonder if his date would be able to find him. Mathieu was sure he'd spot her, he didn't need to see her beautiful face to notice the tiny things that made her who she was. The way she walked graceful but timid in step. The way she curved perfectly to the eyes of a man. Her lips were full and even more her front teeth, they were a bit bigger then the rest this being something he found to be adorable. The biggest feature that defined her from all, were her cheek. They were always tinted with a scarlet color due to the fact she was tender and shy. With all this he was sure he would scout her out. Mathieu stood outside of the Great hall looking to staircase where the Hufflepuffs would surface from the basement. His breathing stayed at a normal pace but his heart sped up as if he were going to explode from his chest. The boy couldn't get nervous now one of them had to be calm.

Then it happened, he watched her walk up the stairs and come to his level and then none of the other people surrounding him didn't matter. He took a moment to drink in her beauty, he couldn't hold back the smile that was brought to his lips, and soon enoguh was standing by her side. "You look...ravishing Amelia." Mathieu complimented looking her over for a moment. "I can't help to think I'm the luckiest guy attending this ball tonight." He added his words sincere. Oh where were his mannered. Mathieu closed his eyes for a moment mentally kicking himself. The boy exhaled taking her tiny hand in his. "This is for you." Mathieu explained showing her the flowed corsage for the occasion. He undid it's ribbon and tied it around her dainty wrist offering a smile. His dark eyes glanced over to the great hall, that was dimmed with flashing lights. The music was was soft for now but he'd let her recuperate before just dragging her somewhere that was crowded with rowdy students. If there was anything they truly had in common, it was the fact crowds made them shy. Simply taking those small steps toward a happy night, inching their way into a comfortable state were they could both enjoy it was the task. "I'm ready when you are." He confirmed putting out his arm for her to link on to. Mathieu wasn't in any type of rush he was just happy to be right here in this moment with Amelia.

The trek from the Hufflepuff common room in the basement seemed longer and more tedious than ever. It had been years since Amy had last attended any of these Hogwarts school events, and frankly, she wasn't keen on the idea of dancing to start with. Her feet already sort of ached, and the nervous butterflies in her stomach were already aflutter. Her dress was too short and for approximately the seventh time since she had left the safety of her dorm, she considered turning back. Emerging from the stairwell to a sea of glittering masks and marvellous robes suddenly made the whole experience a little more appealing: at least visually anyway. Masks, masks, everywhere. She became increasingly anxious as she wondered if she could find her date. Was he even there? She wouldn't have found him if it weren't for a distinguishable feature.

Thank goodness for that curly hair of his.

Eleven years old and Amy had been curious as to how hair so large could fit on the head of someone so small. It was rude to ask a question like that, maybe he didn't want to share his secret or maybe he would become offended. Either way, Amy spent an awful lot of time staring at the back of his head wondering what his parents' hair must look like to produce such a spectacular and magnanimous 'do. That's just how eleven year olds are: easily fascinated.

Fortunately, as she moved away from the trainwreck that is preteen-dome, she began to appreciate that head of hair as Matt, not as just a really impressive jew-fro. Turns out that head of hair that had had her spellbound was accompanied by a nice face, kind eyes, pleasant smile, and friendly, quiet persona: all of which were welcome in Amy's world. It wasn't like she had many friends, anyway. She wasn't exactly in the position to be picky. Not that she could think of anyone better to hang out with than Matt anyway, they had a lot in common… thing besides blushing and shyness. They both liked music, and he was one of few people she'd ever sung in front of. Truthfully, she wasn't quite confident enough to sing with anybody else: and that spoke volumes about their relationship.

Anyway, their relationship thus far had been completely platonic. Well, not really, she had always kinda-sorta liked him: ever since the days of preoccupation with his hair. But they went about things as though there were nothing there and that seemed to work for him, and therefore, it worked for her. Amy sort of just stifled it every time he did something that she found particularly cute, and she hid her blush nearly overtime he smiled. You can therefore imagine how she had reacted when he'd suggested they go to the dance together.

They'd done couplely things together before in a non-coupley sort of way. Occasionally, on Hogsmede trips they'd frequent places such as Madame Pudditfoot's which was renowned for being the cheesiest and most couple-ish place in the village. The tiny hearts suspended from the ceilings and hazy pink atmosphere was supposed to promote love but was rather enough to make any level headed, non-infatuated person vomit. Frankly, the two of them probably would have been too embarrassed to set foot there if it hadn't been for the hot chocolate, which was Amy's favourite, and indubitably better than that at the three broomsticks. Matt and Amy even sat together in classes and at Quidditch matches despite their house differences, however, they'd never really done anything that could be misconstrued as a date.

It had been sunny, the best kind of winter weather, and the two of them had been sitting by the lake just sort of staring across the water and watching their breath turn to steam in the crisp February air, when he'd asked her. If he hadn't caught he she would have toppled into the lake, because she'd lost her footing in surprise and had nearly capsized because of it. Despite being extremely pleased, there was a relatively high shock factor, and she only managed to nod in agreement before scurrying off the the castle where she smiled into her dinner the whole evening.

Girls are funny. Although she only had one dress, it had taken her hours to decide exactly how she wanted to wear it. Was it best accessorized with black or gold? Did she want to wear tights or not? Were heels or flats more appropriate for this event? Did she need a big necklace or a little one? And earrings! Should they be exaggerated or subtle. Men don't fully understand the art of dressing as women do, and women are just sort of born with it, like a sixth sense. Most of the girls in the Hufflepuff common room had spent the entire day with their girlfriends trying to perfect their appearance by enhancing each physical attribute. Amy wasn't really into the whole social aspect of it, but she, much like the other girls, wanted to impress her date as well. The first time she had done her make-up she'd tried to make it match her dress. Honestly, there's only so much pink one can put on their face without looking clownish. Unfortunately, Amy had by far passed that line. Thus began the cycle of putting on make-up, taking it all off, and starting over, that occurred over the course of the day.

"I can't go!" one fifth year girl shrieked to her friend "Look at this pimple, he'll think I'm disgusting!" Amy didn't see the pimple, only too much concealer and foundation: it was the classic cake-face look. Lots of fifteen year olds do that, though, and so Amy didn't comment.

Frankly, she had better things to do, like her own hair. The curse of the Longbottoms is exceptionally thick hair, and though she'd inherited her mother's colouring, she'd taken after her father's hair type. Staring perplexedly into the mirror, she tried to envision the perfect hairstyle. If she had any talent with aesthetic magic she could pile it in perfect curls atop her head and she could maybe add some kind of jewels in so that it bounced when she moved. Then again, leaving it down might be best if she wanted to promote the bouncing. She thought about curling it, but when she tried it always seemed to fall a bit flat. In the end, she twisted it up in a messy bun. She hadn't much wanted to do that because she figured it made it look like she hadn't tried to dress up. And her face was too round to wear her hair up anyways. If she'd had more time, maybe she would've tried to fix it, but feminine beauty had taken an entire day, and she was being swept out of the common room and towards the Great Hall.

After a chorus of maybe-you-should-stay-behinds had run through her head, she was rather pleased she hadn't turned back. Matt looked dashing, and though she was embarrassed about her hair, flat chest and her skinny legs, when he told her she was pretty and offered her the corsage she all but forgot her insecurities. "I suppose I'm ready too." Thank goodness that mask, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to cover up the blush on her cheeks.
