To say that David was nervous about today was an understatement, even though he was sure that it would be a good day. He was meeting Lily in London for the day and he knew they would have a great time. His father agreed to drop him off there since it was a ways away from their home in Ireland, but his father also had some business in town that day, so he didn't see the trouble. He told David to call him on his cell when he was done for the day so that he could meet up with him and Lily and bring them home, or Lily to meet her mother if that was what the plan was, which David assumed would be. His dad noticed that he was nervous and asked David what was wrong, but his inability to answer caused his father figured it out and give him one of those knowing smiles.
David felt uncomfortable talking to his father about this, even though he was sure it was less nerve racking than talking to his mother about it. His father had met Lily once or twice, during their times in Diagon Alley when David was trying to get his things for school, and knew that they were good friends, which is where he said he understood his son's dilemma. It wasn't easy to like one of the closest friends you have as more than friends, especially if you had no real idea of how they felt about you. As far as David and Lily go, he knew that she often made comments about them getting married one day and such, but he was never sure if she really meant it or was just saying it to get a reaction out of him. Naturally, marriage was a long ways off in any respect, but David was still in the dark with this whole thing.
He's always been a shy guy when it comes to girls, even though he is often told he has nothing to be shy or nervous about. He was a good looking kid and was very personable, not to mention that he was creative and smart. He didn't know what it was, but there was something about the opposite sex that got him all tongue tied and afraid. Some could say it was his fear of rejection that made him that way, but he wasn't so sure it was that exactly. In the case of Lily Potter, he knew it was more the fear of losing such a good friend. David liked to think that he wouldn't be so nervous about it if they weren't that good of friends, because losing that friendship wouldn't be as much of a big deal, but that wasn't the case here. David and Lily have been good friends since his second year, her first, and he didn't want to lose that over a crush.
He and his father left the house early so that they could get the ferry from Dublin to Liverpool. Once in Liverpool, they boarded a train to London and ate breakfast together on the train. Once they got to London, David's father brought him to the botanical gardens where he was to meet Lily at eleven o'clock. They had arrived a few minutes early and his father gave him some money so that he could pay for the day, for both of them, and then bid his son farewell. David sat down on a bench just outside the place waiting for Lily, his leg bouncing nervously as he waited. Thankfully he wasn't waiting too long and soon Lily and her mother came walking up to where he was sitting. "Hey!" he said a bit too enthusiastically. He mentally kicked himself for sounding like such a school boy. The last thing he wanted to do was sound like a fool in front of her mother.
"Hello, Mrs. Potter," he said politely to her mother. "You ready? My dad gave me money for the day for us, and said he'd be back here whenever we were ready," he told Lily with a nervous smile. After they said their goodbyes to her mother, Lily and David headed into the building. "Wow, this place is amazing," he said after he paid for them to get in. David had never been there before, and he wasn't sure if Lily had either. "All right," he said as he pulled out a small map of the building and looked at it, "where do you want to start? Ladies choice," he said with a shy grin. He had no preference to where they started or how long they stayed in one spot. He was just glad to be spending time with Lily. He loved spending time with her and he knew today would be a great day.
