Sorrow Made You at the Bottom of the Dark Sea

It wasn't very often that Kaito spent time in the Ravenclaw Common Room, but he had found that sometimes, late at night when he couldn't sleep, it was a pretty okay place to be. The room itself was actually quite comfortable and inviting - it was all the people that were usually in there that put him off of it. But at night, especially during the week, it was often deserted while everyone slept or crept off elsewhere to do whatever it was they did in the night. And when Kaito found himself plagued by a bought of insomnia brought about by whatever cause, he very much preferred it to laying awake in his bed listening to the breathing of his roommates. Very much preferred it.
And it was thus that the blonde boy found himself there now, unsure why it was he couldn't sleep on this particular night, but he had awoken sometime around three and had been unable to fall back asleep. He had an early class the next morning so he knew he would be regretting it then, but for now, as he made himself comfortable on one of the sofas he hardly ever had the chance to take advantage of, he didn't care to have that much foresight. From under his arm, he took out a classic muggle book and flipped open to a dog-eared page. He had spent a lot of his childhood reading, and that hadn't changed after he had come to Hogwarts. Muggle books could be hard to find typically, though, so he had brought as many as he could fit with him for moments like this one. As usual, he was ahead in his studies, so he didn't feel any guilt as he read over the words he had already read four times before with this particular book, glad to be alone and able to enjoy it without having to answer any awkward questions about it.
Sometimes, Kaito missed how simple it had been having a muggle life. Of course he preferred the magical world, and had always been aware of it thanks to his mother being a witch. However, he had spent more of his chilldhood with muggle friends and his muggle father than with anyone magical, and it had definitely been a lot simpler. A lot. He sighed heavily, the words on the page blurring a bit as he felt the overwhelming wage of nostalgia sweep over him, but he forced it to quickly run it's course and move on. That wasn't something he wanted to be thinking about at three in the morning, no matter how much his mind wanted to wander.
"Merlin, I do wish I could just sleep," Kaito then muttered to no one as he rubbed his eyes, suddenly not as happy with the comfortable sofa and his book as he had been when he had sat down. He felt tired, but he still didn't feel like sleeping. It was an inconvenient feeling to say the very least. "This is going to be a long night." He stared back at the book, less interested now but hoping that if he could just maybe read a few more chapters and focus on them rather than letting his sleep-deprived mind wander again, that he would find sleep before morning came....

Maybe then I could sleep at night…
…I wouldn’t lie awake until the morning light.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One pair of brown eyes blinked into the night. A single girl lay awake as the rest of her dorm mates lay snoring in their beds. With a heavy sigh she sat up and swung her short legs over the edge of her bed and slid her tiny feet into the fluffy hot pink slippers she had waiting for her. With another sigh she shuffled her feet loudly towards the door; if she wasn’t sleeping then no one else should be either. Just as her hand was about to touch the door handle she froze not really sure where she was going to go. That thought made her wonder if she should being something to occupy her time. Standing there, her hand hovering between her body and the handle of the door, Miyu bit her bottom lip before running her tongue over the rosy pink skin. With a click of her tongue she nodded and turned around, spinning on her toes like a ballerina and skipped to the stand next to her bed, snatched the book she just couldn’t get enough of and spun around again before skipping to the door, turning the handle and letting the door close behind her with an audible snap. Miyu smiled to herself and bounced down the stairs towards the Common Room, At least I can start there. She thought to herself.
On the way down the stairs she held the book in front of her and glanced over the cover. Again she let out an audible sigh as she took in the beauty that was the slightly less than masculine heartthrob that depicted the character within her book. Stopping halfway down the stairs she smiled to herself and bit her lip as she ran her hand over the hard cover of the book, imagining that she was actually stroking the chizzled jaw of the half clothed male. With a giggle she dropped her hand and let the hand holding it fall to the side as she slipped down the stairs one at a time. The hard plastic of her slippers making a soft slapping sound as it slid over the edge and hit the stair below. As she slid down, she made clicking sounds with her tongue and looked into the darkish Common Room wondering if she would get her privacy or if she would be have to pretend to pay attention to someone unpleasant… again.
When she finally reached the bottom step she noticed that she wasn’t alone after all, but she was actually able to smile. Though she stood there for a few long seconds she wasn’t stalling, rather wondering what best to say to the occupant of the cozy chair. Finally knowing how best to approach the lone person she skipped towards him, the bleached blonde hair stuck out not only here but everywhere. It amused Miyu just how different the boy needed to make himself to feel happy. With a soft laugh she came to a stop next to the chair and held her book in both hands while rocking back and forth on he heels. “So what homosexual romance novel has you so entertained dear brother?” Miyu asked only a slight smile on her face. Sure it might have been slightly rude and rather mean, but what was the point of being a twin sister if you couldn’t pick on your brother?
With a giggle she reached over and ruffled Kaito’s hair, knowing that it would probably annoy him. Feeling satisfied she crossed to the chair closest to her brother and flopped into it, bouncing up and down a few times, allowing her pigtails to bounce as well. In her mind she imagined that anyone else would find that action quite adorable, but since it was her brother across from her she doubted he would see it as such. He probably thinks I’m annoying, a thought that actually amused her. She found it fun to annoy her brother because she found him too quiet and detached a lot. When she stopped bouncing she sat straight up and just looked at her brother wondering, for probably the millionth time, why they weren’t closer. It wasn’t for lack of her trying, but she just never could seem to break through.
Tilting her head to the side she continued to examine her brother. “I kid dear brother. How are you?” She asked, genuinely because she hadn’t really talked to him much. “And what are you reading? Another muggle book?” Miyu giggled and held up her book in both hands and waved it from side to side in front of her. “Because it just so happens that I’m reading a muggle romance novel. It’s amazing! Not that you care.” She wasn’t being rude, just her normal self. Miyu watched her brother and tilted her head to the other side while dropping the book to her lap and crossing her hands on the cover. Finding that position uncomfortable she put her hands under her legs and bounced up and down again slightly just watching her brother in the dim light. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kaito was aware that someone else had entered the common room about an hour after he had first gotten there, just when he was about to give up and go try to get more sleep again - if that was even possible, he wasn't even slightly tired, just bored. And if someone else was going to come and spend time down here, then he no longer wanted to be in the common room anyway and it would lose all appeal for him. However, he couldn't be bothered getting up just yet, so he decided to finish the chapter he was reading and then head back to the dorm. Maybe he was at least physically exhausted even if his mind was working overtime, he thought, since his legs felt stiff and his body heavy. He just hoped that whoever it was would mind their own business and not bother him - most people didn't any more, having learned over the past six years that talking to Kaito was a pretty one-sided, underwhelming experience.
And then suddenly that other person was right next to him - more than that, speaking to him. It seemed like Kaito's one desire was not going to come through. It took a few seconds after she had spoken for him to realize what had been said, and to realize who said it, and with a realization a new feeling settled in the pit of his stomach; whether a good one or a bad one he couldn't really tell, but it was definitely there. It was Miyu, his sister, and even moreso than that, his identical twin. Though the two managed to look shockingly different in the way they presented themselves now, growing up they had been quite hard to tell apart, especially the times when Miyu kept her hair short. Now though, it was longer and in pigtails, and her vibrant choice of pyjamas contrasted sharply to Kaito's own grey tank top and black shorts, and their differences were in far more than their personalities.
For twins, Kaito and Miyu had never been very close, despite the stereotype that all twins live, sleep, and breath one another's lives. Miyu had been close to their mother, whereas Kaito had been much closer to their father, and while they had grown up as one happy family all living together and such, they had lived very separate lives with their own friends and interests. After coming to Hogwarts, the two had drifted even farther apart. While Kaito still trusted Miyu more than anyone else - though he would never share that with her - and was willing to be a bit more open with her than other people, sometimes it was hard to see her as a twin sister rather than just as another person who happened to be in the same house as him. Sometimes he wanted to let her be more than that, to have the sort of relationship that was portrayed between twins in literature, but he didn't know how and was too afraid to try. Thus, having her here made him feel like she was both the best person to disturb him - and the worst.
The blonde boy frowned as her words actually registered in his mind, though he didn't give her more than a sideways glance before his gaze fell back to the book in front of him. "You're so funny, Miyu," Kaito replied flatly, his tone rather stoic. The last thing that interested him was reading any sort of romance novel, whether homosexual or not, and she knew that. He wasn't going to let her get to him tonight though, even if her opening statement left him feeling a bit bristled. But he didn't have to show her that. And then suddenly he felt her hand rather rudely ruffle his hair, and he quickly ducked away from her, pushing her arm away with his own before she could do anything else. "Come on, it's too late at night for that," he muttered flatly, trying to smooth his hair back out even as she dropped into the chair across from him. Looked like she was here to stay - great.
Well. Maybe it was better. Though it didn't seem possible, sometimes even Kaito got tired of being alone all the time...
As usual Miyu was already talking again, so Kaito didn't have to think about how he felt about her being there right now. "I'm tired," he lied in response to her question about how he was, but didn't bother to ask her back. What was she doing up in the middle of the night, anyway? Could she also not sleep? It seemed strange that out of their entire house, it was the two Chang twins who were suffering from insomnia at the same time. Very curious indeed. And from the way she was acting, Miyu was apparently not tired in the slightest; or at the very least, it wasn't affecting her usual bubbly personality.
Kaito shrugged when she questioned him about what he was reading, and then suddenly found himself staring at the cover of her trashy novel. "You have horrible taste in books, you know," Kaito remarked with a scrunched nose and a shake of his head, dropping his gaze back to his own book before slowly closing it. He wasn't going to be able to read with her bouncing around like that anyway, and he couldn't even remember the past few pages as it was. "Why are you so awake in the middle of the night?" he then asked her, settling down a bit more comfortably into his own seat. He glanced sideways and away from her, feigning disinterest, but he was genuinely curious. "Seems strange that we're both awake," he then muttered, voicing his previous thoughts aloud.

Maybe then I could sleep at night…
…I wouldn’t lie awake until the morning light.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Miyu thought she was hilarious so when her brother’s flat tone greeted her she brushed it off. So what if he didn’t find her joke funny, anyone else would. After all, as siblings wasn’t that the way they were supposed to behave? Weren’t they allowed to joke at each other expense? Wasn’t that the point of being siblings? To make each other made while still having each other’s backs when the need arose? Miyu thought her assumptions were correct, but how could she know when she hardly knew what having a sibling, let alone a twin, was like.
As she ruffled his hair, she thought it was pathetically adorable the way he tried to get her to stop even though she was already crossing to the chair. She assumed that regular siblings did these sort of things as well, but again she hardly knew. As she sat down and watched him smooth out his hair, she rolled her eyes. “Really, Kaito?” She laughed and made a point of looking around the room. “Are you that worried about how you look that you feel the need to fix what little damage I did just to please an empty room?” A smirk played at the corner of her mouth as she leaned slightly forward. “You look fine, and no one cares. Besides, if anyone does come down here they won’t be paying attention to you anyway, not with me sitting here.” Was she really that cocky? No. Miyu just liked to get a laugh out of people and she found that, even if you were complementing yourself, if you made any kind of remark about how you looked it got people to laugh. “I kid of course.” She shrugged as she sat back up in her chair.
Miyu stopped bouncing and looked at her brother. It was a shame they weren’t closer being twins. Miyu had always wanted a close relationship with her brother, but it always seemed to elude her despite her best efforts. It was almost to the point that she was about to give up. For sixteen years she had tried and failed to have the friendship she so desired. Miyu titled her head to the side just watching the blond in front of her. She wondered why he was awake now and if he did this sort of thing often. I sure don’t
It almost felt awkward being in the same room with Kaito. Over the past years, they hadn’t had hardly any alone time but Miyu suspected it had been purposely done. She knew he brother had been pulling even farther away from her over the years. It wasn’t that she blamed him, they had the whole castle between them it seemed. Now that she was sitting across from him though, he didn’t seem any closer. How was she supposed to form a bond with him when he was so shut off to her all the time.
“If you’re tired then go to bed.” Miyu stated flatly, looking towards the fire again. “I mean that’s what beds are made for, sleeping.” She giggled at her own remark, but stopped suddenly and sighed. “Why are you awake anyway?” It was funny to her that they should both be awake at this hour, but she wouldn’t be the first to voice that finding. It had been made evident that Kaito wasn’t fond of bonding with her so she wasn’t about to try now, in the middle of the night when she was sure that she had somehow pissed him off. I’m good at that.
Though it didn’t bother her as much as it should have, she was worried that her brother didn’t take to her attempts to bond. Was she that repulsive to him? Miyu thought she was rather adorable and a joy to be around, as did her friends, but apparently Kaito was immune to her cuteness. It made her a little sad to think that she was fighting a losing battle and the thought of another summer spent almost entirely alone mad her stomach drop sickeningly. They were supposed to be family and know everything about each other. Miyu trusted her brother above anyone else, with the excetion of her mother, but still he didn’t know anything about her.
When he commented on her choice in books, Miyu had to look at the cover. She knew exactly what she had been reading, but it had momentarily slipped her mind. He really didn’t know her at all. “This author just happens to be fabulous! The book is about more than what it appears to be. Her literary ability is unbelievable.” Miyu stopped defending her book and titled her heard to the side. “Since when do you care what my taste in books are?” Creasing her brows, she studied her brother until he asked another question. Which was fine with her, she didn’t need to have her brother giving her the third degree about what she was reading. She didn’t much care of what he read either. “I don’t know.” She replied. “I just woke up an couldn’t go back to sleep.” Miyu shrugged and bounced a little. His next remark struck her as odd as did his disinterest. Was it just her or did he look like he was faking it. Either way, she was glad that he had voiced his realization so she didn’t have to. “You don’t think we’re finally having a twin connection thing do you?” She scooted to the edge of her seat, her eyes wide, a fake, but dazzling smile on her face. “Because that would be super amazing! I would finally have proof that you aren’t an alien.” Her smile dropped as she looked across the distance to her brother. “I agree though, it is a little strange that it’s us two and not some other pair down here.”
That was the best he was going to get. Why make herself into a fool? Though she earnestly thought that it was a twin bond that had brought them to be in this place, she wasn’t going to give Kaito an excuse to walk away. She knew that if she tried to bond with him here, he would just push away like he always did and to be honest it felt nice to be here with him. She wasn’t ready to give up the connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
